Project Spotlight: Honoring History at James Madison’s Montpelier

Every project deserves respect, but some also carry a deep sense of honor and responsibility. Recently, we had the opportunity to work at Montpelier, the historic home of President James Madison! And for us, this was more than just another painting project; it was a chance to preserve a piece of American history.
Restoring a Landmark, One Step at a Time
Unlike modern homes and commercial spaces, historic properties come with very specific requirements. The goal isn’t to modernize or “update,” but to carefully protect and restore, making sure every detail is true to the period. At Montpelier, that meant setting aside modern conveniences like sprayers and power tools. Instead, we went back to basics: painting by hand to achieve historically accurate finishes. Yes, we’re dedicated.
Our team focused on two key areas:
Steps and Shutters – These features are some of the most visible elements of Montpelier, and they required precision and patience to bring back their original character. Each shutter was carefully painted by hand, ensuring the finish was both durable and faithful to the home’s historic style. The steps were given the same level of attention, balancing protection from daily use with an authentic look.
The Montpelier Station – Homes weren't the only thing we were painting at Montpelier. We also worked on the train station nearby applying the same philosophy of accuracy and care. Every brushstroke was made with respect for the craftsmanship of the past, creating a seamless blend between preservation and renewal.
Why Historic Painting and Restoration Work Matters
As we mentioned above, painting a home like Montpelier is not the same as painting a new build or even a modern renovation. Every decision carries weight. The colors, the textures, the finishes; all of it must be done with an eye toward history. And let's be honest: when you’re working on a home tied to one of the Founding Fathers, there’s no cutting corners.
This kind of project highlights something we take pride in: our ability to adapt our craftsmanship to the unique needs of each job. Whether it’s using state-of-the-art tools on a commercial repaint or putting the modern conveniences away and relying on handwork for historic accuracy, our team brings the same level of commitment.
A Legacy of Local Landmarks
Montpelier is just one of the many historic properties we’ve had the privilege to work on over the years. From community landmarks to private residences with unique character, our team has developed a reputation for bringing the right blend of skill, patience, and respect to every job.
For us, these projects aren’t just about preserving paint; they’re about preserving stories. Buildings like Montpelier are part of the fabric of our region. They remind us of where we’ve come from, and they deserve to be cared for with a level of craftsmanship equal to their legacy.
