Exterior Paint Color Tips

Exterior Paint Color Tips

The exciting possibilities that come with spring are here, and we are all looking for ways to improve our homes. There are so many options, and even if you narrow it down to painting, it can be hard to decide where to start. How about painting the exterior of your house after the long, cold winter? After all, the exterior of your home is what makes the first impression for anyone who sees your home. In addition, this can be a really fun project, there's a lot of room for creativity, and your house can be totally transformed.

For some homeowners, the main hesitation is that the paint color choice can be intimidating. What if you choose the wrong color for your house and it looks terrible? Don't worry, we're here to help! Here are a few ideas for choosing a good exterior paint color.

A White House with Black or Colored Trim

White is a classic option for your house exterior. It doesn't really clash with anything, and it can be very striking when paired with the right trim. One of the best trim colors to go with a white house is black, which creates a sharp contrast. This is a classic, beautiful look. Other colors can also be striking, though; navy blue is just one of the many trim or accent colors that would be great with white.

A Beige House with Dark Neutral or Strongly-Colored Trim

Beige sometimes gets a bland reputation, but it can be very attractive on the exterior of many homes. There are dozens of different types and shades of beige, and each one is slightly different, so the best exterior trim colors can vary as well. Many rich shades of brown look great with beige, as well as deep green or blue. Finally, black trim looks wonderful with beige, or if your walls are a darker tan, white can be a stylish option.

A Colored House with White Trim

If you're the type that doesn't love neutral colors, then boldly-painted walls are probably the most exciting option. There are many choices, depending on the style of your home and the neighborhood you live in. Some popular choices right now are deep blue, dark gray, and sage green, but you're not limited to those! You can look at Houzz or Pinterest for creative ideas, remembering that if a pictured house is a different style than yours, the same colors won't necessarily look the same way. If you go with a bold color, white trim is usually the best choice, but that's certainly not a firm rule. Have fun with it, and bear in mind that contrast is key!

Shutters and front doors Are the Place for Really Bold Colors

Do you like the idea of bold colors, but you are not ready to paint your house or trim very bright? Well, you can always do a bright color on your front door or shutters! No matter what color your house is, there are many options for your front door and shutters. They can match or contrast with your trim. Red is a great color for front doors, navy blue or forest green can be very striking options, and black is an increasingly popular choice.
