Interior Painting: Light Colors over Dark Colors
How often do you use the "Undo" button on your computer? If only all changes could be reversed with that "Control-Z" keystroke! If you have ever tried painting over an interior wall that was previously painted with a dark or bold color, you know it is a challenge. That old color keeps wanting to show through the new one! Fortunately, with the right process, it is not impossible. It just takes the right products, and some patience.
Priming the Wall
Before you try applying a new topcoat over that old, bold color, it is important to apply primer. This helps to cover over the previous color with a protective block, so that it will not show through the new paint. It may take several coats to achieve this, but because primer is cheaper than topcoats, this is a good way to save money and frustration.
When it comes to interior paint, you get what you pay for. A high-quality primer will contain more pigment and better binders, so that you will get effective coverage and color blocking in fewer coats. In some cases, you may even want to use a stain-blocking primer, as this helps to seal out that old color more effectively.
One more interior painting tip that you may find helpful: ask your paint store to add pigment to your primer so that it is closer to the eventual topcoat color you plan to use. This way, when the primer coats are done, you can get beautiful topcoat coverage in fewer layers.
Other Interior Painting Tips
- Always wash your interior walls before priming or painting them. This ensures better paint adhesion and a smoother finish.
- Use painter's tape and drop cloths to protect the area. Even if you have a steady hand and you are careful with the tools, drips have a way of escaping from you!
- Take your time. The painter's worst enemy is being in a hurry. If you don't wait long enough between coats, or you don't use enough coats, you will regret it.
- For best results, work with a professional house painting company!
