Lighting & Color

"But that's not the color I picked!" This lament is voiced all too often by homeowners about the paint colors which were selected from a color card chip in the paint store. After the paint dries on the wall, they are sometimes faced with disappointment.

Williams Professional Painting recommends a simple remedy to this common problem: switch on the lights and look at the color under the actual lighting in which it will appear.

We strongly advise checking and selecting color under the right light to avoid disappointment. If color choice is critical, color selection should be made under the actual lighting conditions of the space to be painted.

Not all artificial light is the same, and various types of lighting have differing effects on paint color. Incandescent lighting, most often found in residential settings, provides a totally different lighting environment to flourenscent lighting, normally found in commercial space. Special effect lighting, such as spot or track lighting very often distorts color. Even daylight can change the paint color, depending on the time of day.

Here are some tips on selecting the right color under various lighting conditions:

White and off-whites are the safest colors to use; they distort less under various types of light. Pale shades also do not undergo much change under different types of light and tend to remain true. However, both whites and pales have a tendency to reflect other colors. For example, a woman who had her entire living room painted in Linen White, insisted the walls were pink. The pink tone, in fact, was a reflection of the crimson wall-to-wall carpeting throughout the room.

Color should not be checked in an empty room. Since objects absorb and reflect color in different ways, color on the walls and ceiling very often becomes subdued and undergoes change by a room's furnishings.

If you do view a just-painted empty room, try to determine exactly how much of the wall surface will be visible after furnishings are reassembled in the space.

When using dramatic, daring colors, experiment first. Paint a sheet of poster board large enough to provide a true color reading and view it on the surface, under the lighting conditions for that space.

Color behaves entirely differently on a ceiling surface than on a wall surface. In most homes, the surface is being lit from below by floor lamps. Incandescent light reflected up to a ceiling makes the color on the ceiling appear much richer since the surface is reflecting light. If no light is hitting the ceiling, the colors will appear much darker and deeper. For example, a red ceiling when lit with incandescent lighting will turn to orange.

The gray-green family of color, including taupe, khaki, putty, sage and the historical colors are chameleon-like and will dramatically change under different lighting conditions, including daylight.

The look of a room can be intentionally altered with lights. Consider using atmospheric or mood lighting. A romantic look in the bedroom or dining room can be achieved by using pink bulbs. However, special lighting is usually not welcome in the bathroom/powder room when a true light is required for make-up and shaving. Also, avoid blue and green lighting in all rooms since they distort all colors.

While gloss levels can add richness and depth to color, the lighting under which they appear must be taken into consideration. Gloss levels of paint will impact on how color appears in certain light. The higher the gloss level, the higher the light reflectance, which means -- in simple terms -- more light will bounce off a wall painted with a high gloss finish than a flat finish.

Wash lighting will accentuate certain colors, making them richer. Placing recessed lighting fixtures in positions which wash over a wall will create light and shadow which add drama and depth to the surface while a spotlight, focussing on a fixed point on the surface, will create a hot spot and distort color.

Williams Professional Painting

Carlos was the crew leader when I had my newly purchased condo painted in July. I know Edison worked several days but I do not know the name of any of the other workers. I had the walls, ceiling, trim & doors, and kitchen & bathroom cabinets painted as well as new hinges and hardware installed on all the cabinets. Plus Williams Prof Painting removed a big ugly mirror, repaired the drywall and installed crown molding in the living room, dining room and hall way. All this was going on at the same time I had hardwood floors installed. I was on a very tight time frame and Carlos did yeoman’s duty keeping the job moving along and keeping me informed every step of the way. There were a few really minor, minor hiccups…to be expected when you have this much activity going on in a small space. Carlos worked until after 7 PM the night before I moved in. Did I mention it was the hottest week of the year and the A/C stopped working? All of this was done with no sacrifice in quality.

I was so pleased with the work of Carlos and Edison that I requested either of them when I hired Williams Prof Painting to do some minor ceiling drywall repair and painting touch-up after I changed out a kitchen ceiling light fixture in September.

The prices for the whole condo job and the small kitchen ceiling repair job were exactly what was quoted. The crown molding was time and material and the final price for the crown molding was within $100 of the verbal ballpark range the estimator gave me. No additions and no surprises.

William Professional Painting is not the low price contractor but the price is very competitive for the quality of work performed. I will ask for Carlos or Edison at Williams Professional Painting any time I need painting or professional carpentry/drywall repairs.

We have always been pleased with Williams Painting

Hi,

This week Juan completed several painting projects around our house and did a wonderful job.He was prompt, neat, and very detailed. The front stoop and trim that were repaired and painted look new (as new as a 180 year old house looks). Most impressive was the back gate.He took perfect measurements of the old rotten gate, built a new one, installed it using our historic hardware and painted it.All in an efficient and precise manner. We have always been pleased with Williams Painting and will continue to use them going forward.

Best,

A nice review for our foreman D2

D2 did an excellent job. The bedroom never looked so good..He was polite, efficient and skilled. He spotted and repaired nail holes and surface imperfections that were not particularly noticeable. And the result was beautiful. I would definitely recommend him.

A Happy Client.

I wanted to let you know how happy we were with the exterior paint job that was done at our house the week of March 14, 2016. Unfortunately I cannot recall the foreman's name - I think it was Santo. He and the other painter did a wonderful job. They were very courteous and professional and we are very pleased with the work they did. I would definitely hire them again.

Thank you!

Interior Painting Project

Bryan Pinto, one of William's foremen, and his team showed up early the first day and performed their work with efficiency and care. The team finished the job promptly and did excellent work, carefully executing detailed carpentry work on crown trim and painting as high as the peak of our four story town-home. Very impressed with their work and would hire again.

Thank you very much for such good service!

We were very happy with the work done by Williams Professional Painting and the crew who worked at our house. They were very careful and thorough. I appreciated that they made sure all the windows opened and locked after they finished. Bryan and Daniel (and Edwin earlier) were great! They kept us well-informed about their progress and discussed options at various decision points. I've already recommended your company to two families - and will continue to do that if anyone's looking for this type of service. I also appreciated the way the office kept us informed as we went through all the delays due to rain, and the fact that Milton came by to check on progress and consult on an issue that arose.

Thank you very much for such good service!

Best regards,

D. & T. W.

Note of Commendation

Rick:

We want to commend Juan, Caesar, and Eric for the excellent paint job they did at our residence during the week of 14 November 2016. The crew did outstanding work in the painting of our upstairs hallway and adjacent entranceways and niches. Their attention to detail combined with their skillful application of unique color accents and faux painting techniques has given the area done a grand appearance. Their work is the reason why when it comes to excellence, we select Williams Painting.

Interior Professional Painting Alexandria, Virginia

Williams painted four rooms in our home, the entryway, and stairs. They also repaired plaster ceilings and walls and assisted with paint color selection.

We had a great experience. The estimator (Alvis) was efficient and knowledgeable. The designer (Lisa) who helped us pick colors was skilled at putting together color combinations that looked good and matched our tastes. The painters/plasterers (Santos and Carlos) did an exceptional job to make our home look like new. I even had a chance to meet Mr. Williams who was very professional and down to earth. My only (very minor) critique would be that the cleanup after the job was finished could have been a touch better.

Williams Professional Painting

Dear Mr. Williams

I would like to thank your staff, Milton Chavez, Lisa Reyes,Juan Maldonado and Eric Quinteros for their exemplary professionalism and outstanding work on my newly remodeled basement. Milton was totally up front with me every step of the way. He explained all additional charges which would be needed to remedy the newly discovered mold and to add crown molding which were not included in original contract. Lisa did a wonderful job helping me select paint colors. Juan and Eric arrived promptly every day, worked almost non-stop even when the temperature was an unbearable 106 degrees. I want you to know I will be putting my comments on Yelp and will be sending you a copy.

Again my sincerest appreciation for a job well done. I will be recommending you to my family and friends.

Sincerely,

Exterior Painting Estimate

I didn't actually get any work done by Williams because my timeline would not work with the schedule but they actually sent me an email to let me know that they would have to decline the opportunity to work on my project. This is the first time I've ever received such a courtesy from contractors in the home improvement business, and I cannot express how wonderfully professional this is. I have had far too many experiences of contractors coming out to estimate, only to never contact me again, or to go through the trouble of sending me a quote and then never actually schedule the work.

While I did find someone who was able to do the work I requested in my short time frame, in the future, I will definitely contact Williams again for a bid. Just this email was enough to tell me about the company culture here, and I have great confidence in their professionalism.

A Holiday Treat!

"Thank you for coming over to pick up the check; I appreciate it. And please tell Santos and Rodrigo how much I appreciate nice work – especially finishing the extra work in time to show off the whole house to my Thanksgiving company. That was a nice holiday treat!"

Thank you

The end result of their efforts look marvelous.

This note is intended to confirm our orally expressed appreciation of the fine work that Sr. Maldonado and his partner performed at out our house. The end result of their efforts look marvelous. The exterior, however, masks the results of their astute examination and careful restoration of those portions of the house that had suffered over time. It is important

Thank you for an excellent staff and for quality work!

Milton,

I wanted to send a quick note this evening to let you know how happy I am with the exterior painting work. The guys finished up tonight, working very late in order to complete everything before the heavy rain starts early tomorrow, and the house looks fantastic!

I also want you to know what a terrific team you have, so professional and always gracious. They worked meticulously each day (I don’t even think I saw them eat lunch!), and they were always ready to explain anything they were doing whenever I asked questions. My experience with your company has been wonderful and I look forward to working with you again early in 2017 to complete my interior plaster repair and painting project.

Thank you for an excellent staff and for quality work!
